If you have Parkinson’s, the boundary between “Awake” and “Asleep” isn’t a clean line—it’s a blurry, glitchy mess. Lately, I’ve been experiencing what I call “Ghost Input.” My brain is running commands on hardware that isn’t even plugged in.
The Swiping Incident (Hypnagogic Hallucinations)
Yesterday, as I was dropping off for a snooze, I was busy swiping apps away on my phone. My thumb was moving, the “feeling” of the screen was there, and the mental intent was clear. Then I snapped to. No phone. My hands were empty.
- The Glitch: This is a “Hypnagogic Hallucination.” In the “Rusted System,” the dopamine levels are often in a tailspin during sleep transitions. Your brain starts the “Dream OS” before the “Reality OS” has fully shut down.
The Purple Paradox (Tactile Illusions)
Just now, I was at my PC, drifting off, and I gave Purple (my Black Lab) a nice little stroke on the back with my index finger. I could feel the fur. Except Purple was across the room, and I was actually stroking my own joggers.
- The Glitch: This is a tactile illusion. My brain took a real sensation (touching my leg) and remapped it to a familiar memory (petting the dog) because the “Sensory Processing Unit” is currently operating with a massive amount of packet loss.
The Roast Potato Debate (Internal Auditory Leak)
And then there was the full-on conversation with Sarah about roast potatoes. In my head, we were mid-debate. In real life, I was alone in a quiet room.
- The Glitch: This is your REM cycle “leaking” into your semi-conscious state. Usually, your brain “paralyzes” these thoughts so they stay in your dreams. In a Parky brain, that “firewall” is full of holes.
🔬 Why is the Software Crashing?
- The Dopamine Side Effect: The very meds we take to keep us moving (Carbidopa/Levodopa) are notorious for causing “Vivid Dreaming” and sleep-onset hallucinations. It’s the trade-off for being able to walk.
- REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD): About $50\%$ of us have a system where the “Dream Paralysis” doesn’t work. We act out our dreams, talk in our sleep, and sometimes, we see the dreams while our eyes are still open.
- The “Insight” Save: The good news? I know it’s a hallucination the second it stops. Doctors call this “Retaining Insight.” As long as I know the roast potato debate wasn’t real, my “Executive Function” is still winning the war.
The Lesson
Don’t panic. You aren’t “losing it.” Your brain is just a high-performance computer with a corrupted sleep-mode driver. It’s weird, it’s frustrating, and it’s a bit eerie, but it’s just another day in the life of a Rusted System.
